In my opinion, a player like Lleyton should work with a top coach: when he was trained by Cahill he played his best tennis ever and I saw a lot of improvements during his cooperation with Tony Roche. I would suggest Gilbert, Connors or Stepansky (I don't remember the right spell, I do apologise for that). I've never heard of John Alexander, I'll check on the internet. I think that good tactics, wise strategies and ability of "reading" what to do in a match are essential elements to return in the top 5, especially when you get near the thirties. - By Umberto February 3, 2010 at 09:18:08 AM
I'm up for the job too if I'm asked. The sunny places, the five star hotels, girlfriends all around the world, some time in the gym to remain fit, some hitting the ball with Lleyton. I am the right man. And I'm not expensive. Lol, no I don't think Lleyton needs a new coach at the moment, the work with Nathan Healey has been productive and don't forget back then Cahill was not considered as a top coach he was just a former player, like Healey now. I agree with Nico. I think Healey has done a great job. Lleyton got to the 4th Round of The AO without losing a set and playing with a broken hip that he knew was going to require surgery. It takes an awful lot of mental strength to pull off something like that while at the same time fooling the entire world (including myself) into believing that your body is 100%. Healey is perfect because he's willing to travel and hit with Lleyton all the time. Some people have called him a glorified hitting partner but if that's the case, he's a pretty good one because Lleyton is hitting the ball as cleanly as I've ever seen him. - By dg February 3, 2010 at 09:31:42 PM

Stoltenberg came at the beginning of 2002, so he helped him win Wimbledon but the US Open was won together with Cahill, who then decided to not travel because of his children and a few weeks later he was Agassi's coach... - By Nico February 4, 2010 at 09:03:06 PM
It's not really about how good a job Healey can do, it's more about whether Lleyton will listen to his ideas. He won't change his game on his own but he needs to play more offensive against certain players. Only Nadal has the full confidence of beating Roger and can comfortably play against him. He'd only lose on grass or if he's worn out during previous matches. A handful of players could have beaten Roger here, with several chances to do so but just can't finish it off. At the start of the Open, I really didn't believe he would win it. In Round 1, Andreev had a lot of opportunities to take a 2 sets to 1 lead but just cannot convert. The same thing is true with Davydenko. He was a set and a break up plus another chance of a double break until he fell apart and Roger reversed the trend and won resoundingly. Murray was almost certain to get the third set at least but too many errors at crucial points cost him everything. Lleyton has pretty much reduced his double faults and unforced errors, but he still needs more power to have a go at the big guns. Rafa slumps to #4 after the Open, which could likely mean a semis encounter with Roger in the big tournaments. The last three slams Federer's won he never played Rafa. I think Rafa even with his recent form, if he's fit then he's not going to lose a five set match against Federer. On any surface, as he already proved by winning Wimbledon, the French and the AO the last time they met in finals. Fed got a second breath of tennis life last year when he beat a worn-out Rafa in Madrid, and the Spaniard's early French Open exit left the door open. When he cried after losing Australia 2009 he thought it was the end of it all, a falling star. .You're right a change happened inside Federer and that change happened the day Rafa lost against Soderling. I think he will be back .. READY! ... ready for his next run! He will come to play RG, Wimbledom and USO, and then, the rest of the season, where he didn´t do that good last year, wich means that he can gain a lot of points, and start 2011 season with no points to defend at the first part... i think thats good, he will be back folks!! Lleyton still wants to win big, if not he wouldn't have had his hip fixed. It's still in his mind, only needing a body that will hold up. It was nearly a decade ago when he was just at the top, playing perfect tennis, until the gremlins prevailed and the Swiss maestro took over. I know he'll have a go at it and won't give up. Wow totally unexpected thing. I didn't even notice he wasn't playing at 100% It's difficult to stay at the highest level when every year you have to miss half of the season. atleast hes getting it sorted now.hes not waiting to see how it turns out like in 2008.in all the interviews hes making it clear that this is not the end for him, which is positive.he should be back for the french, if not defiantly for wimbledon which is his biggest chance of a slam.he hasnt got very many points to defend until wimbledon so his ranking shouldnt slide down too much.its a blow but id rather he gets surgery now and be ready for wimbledon, than continue to play with an injury. - By Ben January 30, 2010 at 11:02:38 PM

Apart from stating the obvious that this is a terrible blow for Lleyton, I'd just like to say how proud I am of his (and his management's) role in handling this situation, he staunchly quashed any suggestion by media that he was injured after the Federer match and gave full credit to his opponent, many would not have been so gracious. This is why I like the man so much, he has so much grit and (I think) respect and credibility. Stupid hip. It's been preventing him from unleashing the top player stuck on his brilliant mind. He was really Fed's equal at least. I can't help remember the Master's Cup in 2002 where they fought in the semis and Lleyton won 7-5 5-7 7-5. according to me,if lleyton is really injuried he needs only some treatment....i don't believe this injury is so serious...we saw how an hip injuried hewitt moved bad on court last year...at AO he was moving really well on court...so with some treatment and 2 weeks of rest he surely be fit for sap open and memphis...c'mon lleyton!!!! - By hewitt90 January 28, 2010 at 07:25:56 PM

I listened to several interviews by Roger federer and he admitted he lifts himself to play his best tennis when he plays Lleyton and Andy Roddick. he said these games were what he looked forward to as he has grown up with both of these players. And Lleyton and Andy both enjoy playing him. I look forward to more tennis agames gainst these players in the years to come. I believe they are what drives Lleyton to continue to be competitive. Anyone ever think about who Lleyton played outside of majors and Master's Series last year? His toughest opponent, based on rank, was Roddick in Memphis. Then he didn't play any strong top 10 players unless it was at a Master's Series. Here's my point. Does Lleyton not get enough practice against these top players and when it comes time he gets too used to playing those weaker players? I don't blame Lleyton that he hasn't played them because sometimes it's just how the tournament worked out with the higher seeds losing before they played him, but maybe he should get in a few more tournaments that Fed and Nadal are apart. Here's the list of tournaments from last year with win/loss beside it. Wins against some weak opponents, then losses to some weak opponents. Biggest win of the year was del Po at Wimbledon. Besides that he played many tournaments with no one good in them and lost, or won the tournament. Outside of majors, Lleyton played seven top 10 players. 7/42 matches outside of Majors. Take away masters series from it and it goes down to 2 top 10 players, both times being Andy Roddick at Memphis and Queens. I'm starting to see a trend... - By Brett January 27, 2010 at 04:33:41 AM

Interesting analysis Brett. I think last year was always going to be a bit different because after the surgery Lleyton was beyond top 100 in the world and had to play a few smaller tournaments to get a better ranking. It was better to do a semi at Memphis than to draw Federer in the first round of Dubai. I think everything comes with the ranking. You play small tourneys, then your confidence grows, you are seeded for the masters series, you get easy draws, you get to play the best players more often, you get used to their level as you said, then you happen to beat one at some stage and all of a sudden you're among the favourites for the slams. It's a whole process that takes two years and Lleyton's obviously in the period when he needs to make some upsets in the masters 1000 events before he pretends of something bigger. - By Nico January 27, 2010 at 05:39:32 AM

Seeing the level of play required for winning these matches, the physical demands and the efforts needed to beat in a row guys like Baghdatis,Tsonga,Djokovic,Nadal,Federerin the same tournament in 5 sets, it is clear for me that this is the limit and the end to long successfull careers like Agassi's Sampras' or Federer's. Even Nadal, the fittest guy on tour can't cope with it anymore, and the number of withdrawals lately show that glory will necessarely be ephemeral. I agree with you Nico in some ways howeverthe reason Nadal is struggling with his knees is because of his game in tennis. Nadal loves to play ridiculous rallys like 50 shot rallys and chase every ball therefore eventually it has caught up with him. The same has happened to Lleyton because of his counter punching game. However I feel guys like Cilic, Tsonga, Del Potro and others like them will be able to play for years because they are more aggressive. Did you watch Murray v Nadal Nico? Yes I did. It was an unbelievable standard of play. Every game lasted for so long and I thought Murray was clearly the better player, not only did he have all the weapons from the back of the court, the backhand longline winners and all that stuff but he also did the aces on breakpoints down and some serve and volley at key moments, everything you could possibly imagine. He was consistent throughout the match and impressed me a lot. I stayed up at 330 am in Canada to watch hewitt who is my fav player. In my opinion federer had played the best ive seen him in years. He served incredible, played great defence, and great transition game too. Also I think hewitt played quite well despite the score. He seemed a lot more consistent then he has been in a while. He looks faster and still has the same attitude. Unfortunately hewitt's game doesnt suit federer. It wasnt the losing streak that got to lleyton i dont think. Hewitt ball is very flat and cant get above federer backhand (his only mini weakness). Also his second serves are very predictable and flat. That kind of bounce of is in the perfect strike zone for both federer forehand and backhand. Lleyton just can't wrong-foot Roger. He tried being aggressive and approached the net more often but just lacked power. Fed had all the answers. Lleyton wasn't at his best today, the only time he started really getting into the match was in the 3rd set but it was too late. I dont think Lleyton's ball striking was not as good today. All credit to Rog, he played very well. Positives are Lleyton has gained lots of points so he should move up the rankings. Lets hope Lleyton continues to get better during the season and to win more titles. I really think Lleyton can beat Rog, he just needs to be more consistent. If I were part of the Aussi Open organization I would never, never make Lleyton play Federer in a night session. We need heat, sun, wind, whatever but not the perfect conditions that obviously suit the swiss. You know Nico, before the tournament started I would've agreed with you on the night session thing. But then I went back and the last 13 losses that Lleyton had against Roger were daytime matches. The only one that was evening match was the 2004 AO and Lleyton took a set off Federer. So I thought maybe a change of scenario would be good for Lleyton. Obviously, I was wrong. Overall, I thought Lleyton played extremely well, except when he tried being overly agressive by coming in, and Federer was just burning him with his passing shots. After last night I really believe Lleyton can win another Slam but he needs luck in the draw and try to avoid Federer. Having Hewitt play late into the second week would have meant more TV audience, more merchandising, and more crowded courts. Not just crowded for R4 but also through the week. The same in France, when Gasquet loses, nobody cares anymore of Roland Garros and watches football instead. roger played very good today. lleyton didn't play his best. but you can only play as good as your opponent let's you. i absolutely agree that lleyton's play suits roger. but the main problem imo was that lleyton didn't executed as well as he should've. in pretty much every game that he was broken he had game points and just didn't convert them. mostly it was an unforced error. At the end when he broke back he had 40-30 to go up 5-4 and hit an relativly easy forehand into the net and went on to lose the game. if he had gone up 5-4 and roger serving with all the pressure on him it could have gone into a fourth set. lleyton was definetly playing his best at the end of the match when his back was against the wall. another thing was that the fanatics were a little passive at some stages. i was hoping for a davis cup atmosphere but very rarely it felt like it. - By Daniel January 25, 2010 at 10:25:20 PM

Regards to his mental attitude, it's always hard, in my opinion, to be pumped up when, on your opponent's serve games, you don't seem to have the slightest chance to break your opponent. Pat McEnroe had an interesting point - Roger has so much respect for LH, that he comes out aggressive and focused. Lleyton didn't do that and his lead up to this match, Donald Young, the walkover, were not good preparation for this match. cal and McEnroe are right on one count, though. The fact that Federer has got much of respect for Lleyton counts a lot against the Aussie. After many losses to Lleyton in his early career, especially the epic Davis Cup one in 03, the Swiss knows that if he lets Hewitt play, he's in for a hard time. Conversely, Federer was undone at the US Open because he did not think much of Del Potro. He was having fun in the first set. Lleyton played extremely well today: his serve was good, the way he moved was nice, his mental attitude was great as usual, his returns were great, but Roger was not of this planet today, no one could have beaten him today. And what makes me angry is that Roger plays like that always against Lleyton: I would bet some money that he is gonna lose against Davidenko. Anyway, regards to Lleyton, we have to take the positive: he showed a consistent tennis, his body looked good, he was fast like in his best periods (2001-2002 and 2005-2006). Just remember of his final in 2006 at the U.S. Open against Roger: he lost 60 76 60, after having won all the previous sets and matches...the problem is that Lleyton's game perfecly suits Roger's one. NICO said something extremely interesting below when he said that the lack of power derives from the movement of the forehand. In my opinion, it is true, Lleyton should try to advance while hitting the ball. However, the lack of power is also determined by the racket: I know that racket coz I've played a bit with it and, in comparison to some other rackets, expecially some oversize ones, my shots leave the cords with less power. Of course I am a rookie, but I think that a different racket could give Lleyton's shots some extra speed. But I am extremely confident for this season: when I read the draw I knew that, among all of the possible top 8, Roger was the worst player to meet because his game is not suitable to Lleyton, but I am sure that Lleyton can defeat the other top Eight and I think in the next tournaments he will play great just like he did at the start of this year. Regards to being more aggressive, this is something Lleyton should consider as a general strategy, but in yesterday match against Roger, when he tried to approach the net it was Roger to win the point. Regards to trying to hit with more power, I am sure he tries his best, maybe he should change racket and modify a wee bit his movement. Absolutely guys, Lleyton played really well. There was rythm in his strokes, pace, he took risks, went to the net and served well. I have a good feeling that if he keeps that form for the rest of the season he can have a crack at many tourneys. At the US Open Federer made mistakes and was human, here it was not the case, as often in night sessions. I'm angry at old players like Pat Cash, Mats Wilander or McEnroe who keep on saying how everyone including Lleyton, Murray, Djokovic, Nadal should go more often to the net. That's so much crap. We're in 2010, the rackets have changed, they are not made of wood anymore and as we saw today 90 percent of the time you lose the point because of a missile passing shot. I think he just lacked some power. To beat Fed you need to hit hard and be relentless. That's how the next top 4 players do it to defeat him. A resurgent Davydenko would also have a great chance of winning the quarters carrying a two-match winning streak against someone he's never beaten prior to that. Lleyton is not hopeless despite the result. There's a noticeable improvement in his play. Let's be honest with each other guys. I know it, Lleyton knows it, and the tennis world knows it. The only way Lleyton is going to win another Slam is if he can get lucky and get on a side of the draw without Fed or Nadal and pray that they get knocked out before the semis and the one on the other side of the draw gets knocked out before the finals. The only way he wins is if he doesn't face either of them. On another note, I heard one of the commentators say something near the end of the 3rd set that summarized everything. It's too late. Lleyton started playing very well against Roger's serve at the end of the 3rd set but it was too late. He was to take those risks all match or he's going to continue to lose to Federer/Nadal etc. He needs to get his first serve in play and HOLD SERVE! Montanes is nothing to Fed. Lleyton certainly has a chance. He just needs to serve well and avoid unnecessary errors. Fed is nowhere near his best anymore and has been beaten twice by the likes of Davydenko, the last encounter being a straight-set loss. We shouldn't blame Baghdatis. I think he could have kept on playing despite the pain he had in the arm, but didn't feel like he could have won that way. He's a sporty guy, last time I saw him applause his opponent at the end of the match, which few players do and he's not the kind to not give his all on a court. I loved the way he played in the first set, and except for a few hickups, the second wasn't too bad either. More than anything, i liked his attitude - he was very aggressive and i enjoyed see him like that. I'm not sure how much he gains with Baghdatis' withdrawal, i think winning in straight would have been better - for practice. Lleyton played awesome. Nothing to do with Baggy's injury. At the beginning both were playing brutal tennis with a lot of pace and this is when Lleyton broke Marcos game. I loved that backhand down the line. Now he's got time to rest and he's physically fresh for the Federer match. It seems like he started out great, then started letting Young make mistakes, leading to Hewitt getting forced into the first set tiebreak after being up 2 breaks. Tomic's style of play is very surprising. He is very smooth, with some vintage flat technique. Almost reminds me of McEnroe in the way that he doesn't look like he's hitting the ball hard. He's the future, he will make a lot of upsets this year, however I think his lack of speed on the court and weak serve won't be enough to make him a top 10 player. Let's see. My prediction is straight sets 6-4 6-3 6-2. naside topic - I was very angry with the TV station running a Hewitt v Tomic Feud item on their current affair's show directly before the match. It was built up all day as the real truth. They did it the day before with Jelena Dokic. I think I hate the press. I listened to the news piece on the Yahoo7 website and it was just a bunch of hot air with the only direct comments coming from Tomic. The respected tennis players were saying in a round about way the boy needs to show respect for his fellow australian players. I say give Luczak the second singles spot. I would put Tomic in the team instead of Luczak. He is the future, let him learn and get experience ! No pressure on his shoulders as it is only a second group tie with Lleyton doing the job. I said it last match and I'll say it again. If Lleyton has to go to a tiebreaker against Young, then I'm not going to feel good at all about his chances this Aussie Open. Straight sets win 6-1, 6-3, 6-2. Also, I watched the Hit for Haiti video and finally saw Tomic's face. I have just looked at the Bio of Donald Young.Nothing special.He is on 195 place in the world ranking.His best performance at the Grand Slam tournaments is US Open 2007-3rd round.Lleyton and Young have played one match(in Washington last year).Lleyton has won 7-5,6-2.I think Hewitt will not have much problems in this match.He should do what he did in his first match-win as fast as possible and concentrate on his next matches. - By Ivo January 20, 2010 at 05:32:07 AM

The scoreboard looks nice, although there is a lot of room for improvement. I didn't find Lleyton as sharp as he was against Seppi in Sydney. He was not as fast and was hitting the forehand a bit too late. He'll get better as the tournament goes on. - By Nico January 19, 2010 at 09:11:27 PM
A little commentary about the Aussie crowd. In my mind they've always been the best crowd in the world when it comes to sportsmanship and respect of the players, however you guys don't make enough noise for Lleyton. I mean in France for example we don't have such a champion but people are screaming their heads off to support their players even in a first round. Apart from the Fanatics the rest of the crowd is too silent to my taste and could have more of an impact on Lleyton's game. I thought the same in 2005 during that famous final against Marat. I totally agree with you, Nico: the forehand shots lacked of power, they ran out of the strings at low speed, this could be a problem against a tougher opponent. Moreover, he played too far from the baseline, letting Horsevar to find some sharp angles to pass him. Not a brilliant match, but let's take the positive: he was pumped up and he won... this could not be sufficient but I am confident to see improvements in his game with Rochus or Young. - By Umberto January 19, 2010 at 09:20:44 PM
Hi guys. I wantd to watch this one on the big screen TV so I was not near the computer to make comment. I liked the way he played. He may not have looked as sharp as he did against Seppi but then again, Seppi is a better player than the brasilian. I liked that he approached the net a few times. This could be his key for further success. I can't wait to be down there. I hope they put Lleyton on for a day match the day he plays Baghdatis/Ferrer. I don't want to be watching from my motel room. As for crowd support, there is always loud support for Lleyton.
